Hi carranza2,

Is there any sense in Germany or Europe as a whole of how significant a problem declining populations throughout Western Europe presents to long term well being?

I can only speak for the situation in Germany. The general awareness of the problem has increased within the last few years. As an example there's currently a German bestseller by Frank Schirrmacher,
Das Methusalem-Komplott
March 2004

He's a leading editor of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung faz.com and describes the menetekel in clear words. Politicians are clueless what to do and the social system in its current setup is unable to support a population with an age pyramid turned upside down.
Immigration can only be a minor part of a solution because highly qualified immigrants don't necessarily want to move to Germany and for applicants with low qualification a considerable investment in their education would be necessary.

I doubt that a Eurabia (a Europe dominated by Arab influence) will emerge. Ok, some extremes can be observed in Berlin already, there's a school in a city district with only five native Germans and hundreds of children of migrants. The school director explicitly advises German parents not to send their children to his school. - In any case I expect inter-generational tensions to increase. Soylent Green, anyone...? imdb.com

Well, the future looks bleak - it feels just like the mid-70ies when I fell for the horror stories of the Club of Rome...
