<< Imatron is an example with the open MRI's for heart and now the full body scans. >>

Now there's an interesting tale, and one with a message.

Imatron is very lucky to have gotten itself bought by GE. At the time, they were enjoying one final bump in over-hyped highly misleading interest in their product. People were banding together and buying their calcium scam machines and setting up shops selling calcium scams and full body scams to people whose only source of information was highly misleading or downright untruthful marketing. They'd scan anything, and they'd scan and rescan every few months until your money or your interest ran out... heck, for a few extra bucks, you could get scanned right along with the family dog. Why, who knows how many dogs' lives they saved !

Now, the vast majority of those operations have floundered. There was a big story in the WSJ on this around January 24 or so. I know of several groups now who don't even have a permanent location anymore. They mount their scanner on a truck and park it somewhere, then try to attract customers, with rapidly diminishing success. They drive the backroads these days sort of like a traveling carnival act.
