Slant Point - How a Killer's Capture Showed America's True Colors

By Scott S on National

I watched the live press conference on FOX this morning about the capture of the BTK serial killer. The tale is tragic, somewhat sensational, embarrassingly long but joyous in the end. But aside from the story, I can't help notice the mere faces on TV as a reflection of the diversity of Ameria.

Speaking before the multitude of cameras was a Hispanic male mayor (with a slight accent), a black male police chief and a white woman DA. In Wichita Kansas!

This doesn't shock me, but moreso just plain say that in many ways the problems of race are not so bad. When the top civic positions in a Midwest city are held by whomever happens to be the best qualified or ran the best campaign - the dreams we fight over in this country have been achieved.

Minorities make up only about 21% of the 600,000 population in Wichita (2000 census - PPT slides). So how does the almost perfect face of diversity end up in reality in a Midwestern American town instead of being forced into advertisements by corporate legal posturing? It isn't about numbers, it's about opportunity.
