Parcel Post is quite competitive with UPS Ground, (& Fedex & DHL) esp. over short hauls, where Parcel Post is usually cheaper (I believe it's because the Post Office has a much bigger network and the local packages don't have to make the trip to a central hub facility as they do for the others). Priority Mail is quite competitive with UPS 2nd day air. If you demand everything go overnight, then it's a different story. But the Post Office stands in no danger of being put out of the parcel mailing business.
