UN team searches for clues to Hariri murder

BEIRUT: UN-appointed experts sought clues Saturday in the murder of ex-premier Rafiq Hariri, as powerful neighbour Syria had yet to start a promised troop pullback under international pressure for a complete pullout.

Under increasing international pressures since the February 14 murder, the Syrian-backed government in Beirut is bracing for a threatened censure vote in parliament Monday when the opposition and the business community have called for a one-day general strike.

Beirut has denied any responsibility and agreed to cooperate with a UN commission of inquiry but have rejected a full international probe.

A day after meeting with government ministers and Hariri’s sons, the UN team of experts early Saturday visited his grave and the site of the bomb blast. afp
