Dean was using a unidirectional microphone, one that blocks outside sound influences--like an audience. What's surprising is even those tv pundits who knew this kept hammering away at it--Chris Matthews, for example. It resonated the same way word spread throughout Talkinghead City that "Saddam kicked out the weapons inspectors." Saddam didn't. Clinton pulled 'em before he initiated bombing, this in the midst of the GOPwinger sex smear campaign against him.
