Have you noticed that when there's a USSC ruling there is frequently a "dissenting opinion" published?

Was that always a practice? In a single judge situation there is no dissenting opinion. The SCOTUS is the last word besides the people. I suspect the minority opinion is intended as a guide for lawyers who want to revisit the issue.

I have also noticed that sometimes there are multiple opinions issued within the majority opinion. Again, I ask of one more qualified than myself if this was always the case?

I still believe that fanning political dissent has reached a high water mark. Can it get any worse?
