More on Townshend story:
3Com reaches accord on high-speed modem technology

LOS ANGELES , Sept 3 (Reuter) - 3Com Corp. on Wednesday said it
has signed an exclusive licensing agreement with the inventor who
made the 56 Kbps modem possible, in hopes of moving the industry
closer to a uniform standard.

.
In a conference call with reporters, Dunsmore hinted
that 3Com may seek royalties from Rockwell and others
for incorporating Townshend's technology in their modems.

"It is our view that Townshend's (pending) patent is very
broad relative to the 56 Kbps end-to-end solution which
would encompass any 56 Kbps implementation," he said.

Rockwell declined to comment on the issue of possible
royalty payments or whether its technology incorporates
Townshend's intellectual property.

A spokesman for 3Com said the company would defend its
license with Townshend, once his patent was issued, but
stressed that 3Com was hoping to move toward an industry
standard and is not looking to get bogged down in patent
infringement lawsuits.

Townshend has worked as a consultant to 3Com for a number
of years. He is president of Townshend Computer Tools and
chief executive of Ordinate Corp. as well as an associate
professor at Stanford University.
