Russ, one thing I found out is that human being does adept to the environment<g>. I would have thought since the pollution in China is so bad, people's life expectancy would be lowered. But the matter of the fact is: it keeps increasing. Shanghai's life expectancy will be 80.29 in 2004. Beijing also is in 77-78 range. I saw plenty of elders in Beijing are now their late 80s and earlier 90s are in pretty good health (similar to what I see in the US).

That said, the industrial pollution in China in certain cluster areas are bad, and they do produce higher than normal number of cancer cases. Just look at how many heavy polluted paper mills have moved to China. IMHO, China should definitely put some restriction on them.
