Bear in mind that for Aluf Benn to be writing about the nature of the Likud is sort of like Joe Klein writing about the nature of the Christian Right in the US. The view is apt to be jaundiced.

That said, it is very difficult for the Sephardim who dominate today's Likud, and who are the most familiar with the mentality of the Arabs, to believe that actual democratic reforms have a place in Arab society. Lebanon, maybe, that's a different story. But among the Palestinians? They'll believe it when they see it, there was nothing in this last election to persaude them.
