The problem seems not to have ended with Chretien.

It's still politics, but aggravated by the minority government. The PM needs to look where he can gain seats in the next election. It ain't gonna be the Maritimes, where the Liberal seat count is about as good as it gets. It ain't gonna be the West -- that would take a committment to good government, which clearly isn't worth the effort. So, one more time, the key is to pander to Quebec. Rather than trying to explain why supporting missile defence would be a good idea, they're just playing to the knee-jerkers.

The whole thing is completely out of hand. It's one thing to have principled disagreements and discuss them from a starting point of basic good will. But the clique that's been running the country for the last generation doesn't fit that description. Believe me, it's not the same country that my ancestors worked to build.
