Until Mr. Summers brought it up, I didn't realize that women were under represented in these fields, and without these kinds of questions we probably wouldn't take the time or make the effort to examine them.......the status quo would prevail.

Some people have a huge problem with the fact that it was Summers who brought it up. Is it because he is supposed to be one of their own and he became a traitor to some cause? A few posters here have accused him of being less than capable of running a University because the question actually entered his mind. (Welcome to the world of political discrimination Mr. Summers)

IMO it doesn't matter who asks questions. What is important is that they are asked. Statisticians and scientists may do what they will......if there is enough interest......these questions will be thoroughly explored. I for one would like to see more women head up Science and Economic departments in our universities. But how could that happen if someone doesn't bring up the fact that they are under represented in the first place, leading us to wonder why it isn't happening now?

If the day ever comes where people are afraid to ask difficult question for fear of being ostracized we will all be worse off as a result. And people most interested in stifling intellectual curiosity will become even more powerful.
