How about: Let 'em go if they want to.

For some reason that's considered unthinkable in official circles.

There's an underlying tension that's been growing for a lot of years. On the one side are the 'elites', centred in Toronto and Montreal, who want Canada to become a social-democratic country along European lines. On the other are the hard-headed pragmatists, centred in Alberta, who want good and efficient (and less) government. The former have the votes, the latter pay the bills. So far appeals to sentiment have kept the pragmatists from organizing in a meaningful way; I suspect that with the right leader that could change, but I despair of it ever happening.

The biggest dispute in Canada/ U.S. relations that comes to mind was over Vietnam. With the benefit if hindsight it's probably fair to say we were smart to sit that one out. I only hope that this one comes to be seen the same way.
