Virtually anybody could live on a single income if they did with the same volume of material possessions as in the 60's, including house size. Houses are 60% or so bigger, there are more autos than people, and far more "stuff" crammed into houses. Families apparently need it all and so are willing to work an extra 2000 hours a year for it.
