"Space has long-term value?"

For the moment, ignore the technology developments. Ignore the present benefits like GPS, international communications, accurate weather predictions and pay per view porn. Instead, consider that if we are going to raise the rest of the planet out of poverty without cutting the standard of living of the developed world, i.e. if it is going to happen at all, we need better access to raw materials and energy. A single nickel-iron asteroid a kilometer or more in diameter brought to Earth orbit would go a long way towards solving a lot of the raw material problems. Lunar sources would be easier to exploit. The potential for exploiting the energy output of the Sun is also very high.

We need to get away from zero sum. As long as we don't exploit space, the only way to get stuff is to take it away from others. Exploiting space changes that equation.
