The biggest dispute in Canada/ U.S. relations that comes to mind was over Vietnam. With the benefit if hindsight it's probably fair to say we were smart to sit that one out.
It was an even bigger and more bitter dispute down here. It fed into Nixon's paranoia and inspired in him a fear of revolution (possibly not entirely unjustified). There were huge demonstrations, riots, Americans turned against Americans. Bombings. Shootings. Domestic terrorism.

Frankly, I thought the US gov't had lost its bloody mind.

I only hope that this one comes to be seen the same way.
It begins to look like you may lose that one. Maybe. See me in 5 years. :-)
