Shorts in this case was demand for AMES stock more than supply can meet. Brokerages would borrow from their clients to satisfy the demand. Goldman Sachs also sold 20 million shares of Apple to the prince of Arabia. Then tried to buy back at $2 below the selling price. They bought all the stock that Steve Jobs owned to pay back some of the borrowed stock. I have not heard the payback on AMES stock yet. The relationship between DDJ mutual funds and Goldman Sachs is disclosed in the 13D/A they filed. Refer to SEC filings in April, 1997.
