I'm afraid this may ultimately be a pyrrhic victory for the Democratic Party. First of all, Medicare is going broke in 10 years, and while this is not quite the same as Social Security, most Americans will only remember Democrats arguing that SS (which medicare is a part) is solvent till 2040. For a very large number of Americans, Medicare is much more important than their monthly Social Security check. Second, private accounts are a benefit to the working class (with no employer retirement plan) - as wealthier Americans should be able to afford IRA or other retirement accounts which already can invest in stock or bond funds.
