But you can have accounts which are nominally joint but functionally separate. That's what Chris and I do. He has de facto exclusive use of the Patent Office Federal Credit Union account, I have de facto exclusive use of the SunTrust account, but both accounts are jointly titled. In the event of death or disability, I can access his funds and vice versa

Kristel and I have a similar arrangement. We have separate checking accounts, with each other listed as Payable On Death on the accounts. Then we have joint savings accounts.

The number one source of friction in a relationship is about money. Our paychecks go in our accounts. I pay the joint bills, and at the end of the month, Kristel transfers her 50% to my checking account. We each have our own money, and we use our joint savings to make family purchases like household goods or furniture or whatever. Voila, an equitable arrangement and not a single fight about money in the entire time we've been together.
