We had to go to "his and hers" accounts because at the time we were broke all the time anyway, and he was gone 14 hours a day, and we were not able to communicate about expenses when it got to the end of the pay period. At first I just opened up my own account, and then realized it made sense to put his name on it. He's never written a check on my account, and I haven't written a check on his account in years, but we could if we needed to.
