Are you aware that the U.N. body is made up of countries who are almost united in their one-sided condemnation of Israel, without balancing out their condemnations with a condemnation of Palestinian and Arab terrorism against Israel? Of course, the U.S. vetos those resolutions. They are too one-sided in favor of Palestine. The U.S. merely balances the scales a bit. Both the Israelis and the Palestinians have plenty of blame to share in their war against each other.
As far as Saddam, please. He briefly tried to buy the goodwill of his people, but then he started spending all the people's money on palaces, torture chambers, and WMD. The brief taste of freedom they might have enjoyed will be nothing compared to the lasting freedom they are winning for themselves now with our help.
As far as American policies of the past decades in the Middle East causing today's destabilization, I have to agree. Our policy of propping up dictators and monarchies has to come to an end. I think Bush's declaration of a new policy to spread Democracy throughout the Middle East is a step in the right direction. If we can use our momentum now towards that end, without the need for more wars, I think great things can be accomplished for the Middle East.
As far as Democracy in the Middle East, you might have been asleep in the last few years, but let me summarize. Afghanistan, Iraq, and now Lebanon are all headed for Democracy. The most recent Palestinian election was the first exercise of real Democracy that region has seen in a very long time. Under Abbas, they have the best chance for a state and a lasting Democracy, than they have ever had in the past. The Iranian people have been agitating for it for 25 years, but are held back by the mad mullahs. The winds of change are sweeping the Middle East and the last to recognize the coming change, as usual, are the liberals such as yourself.
As far as Al-Jazeera being close to BBC quality, excuse me, but I didn't know you were a stand up comedian. That is the biggest joke I've heard in weeks. Jazeera is a hate propaganda machine. They don't know the meaning of the word unbiased.
You were right when you said most Americans don't know what is really going on in the Middle East. You should also count yourself as one of them. |
