The U.S.-based company's manufacturing licence was withdrawn last October because of contamination problems at the factory in northern England, depriving the United States of almost half the nation's anticipated supply.

"Inspectors have concluded that satisfactory progress has been made in the manufacturing areas which had previously caused concern," the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency said in a statement.

"The company has been informed, and is now free to recommence full manufacturing of the vaccine."

On Oct. 5, when it announced the closure of its Liverpool plant, Chiron's stock fell 16 percent, as the move stopped the Emeryville, California-based firm from releasing 48 million doses of its Fluvirin vaccine.
