That's interesting. I've been reading similar things. I can see how we need bases in the Middle East, but a permanent presence in Iraq could cause problems, unless the Iraqi gov't asks us to stay permanently. As far as cost, I'm not so much worried about it. If we pull our troops out of Germany and South Korea, as was planned, then we could redeploy to the Middle East with no additional long term costs. Frankly, given the state of the Middle East and its strategic importance, I think the redeployment is a smart thing. Again, the only thing that worries me is that Iraq and Arab countries in general are not as sanguine about semi-permanent U.S. troop presence as were Germany and South Korea.
