Cyanide works fine, it's cheap and controlable with control of acidity (pH). Established technology exists for environmental clean up, and since the cyanide is carring gold, there's a strong economic incentive to recover 100% of the cyanide.

Most heap leaching is FAR away from people and residential areas.

Chlorine gas is used in many large swimming pools, such as hotels, schools, and public pools. People, usually maintence workers, are injured or die every year from cholrine gas.

Cyanide sound scary.

Chlorine doesn't sound as bad.
