Imagine the adjustments we have had to make over the past 1000 years in order to be a modern techno culture. The Saudis were nomadic tribesmen 50 years ago. Now they have all the state of the art technology and are waited on hand and foot by Pakistani servants. No self respecting Saudi would leave home without a perfect manicure. Yet, the values and traditions of decades gone by are pressing hard. It is a monoculture that is suffering from a unique form of culture shock and values conflicts. The trend seems to be pointing toward a type of class system not too unlike what came from the British move from absolute monarcy to a parliamentary based government. The country is engaged in social revolution that will force some serious changes in the near future. The players are fundamentalists, Tribalists, and secularists. Currently the Tribalists are holding all the cards. Within the Saud tribe there is some division and outside their tribe are radical revolutionaries from all perspectives.
