Ray, I agree with you on most of those points. I think
Nixon would be kicked out of the Republican party today for being too liberal.

Remember, he wanted a guaranteed minimum income, and was in process of proposing that - I agree with that idea. You could then eliminate Unemployment, Welfare, Aid for Dependent Children, and many other programs, and all the Govt. oversight, and spending to do this - and replace it all with a guaranteed minimum income, let's say maybe 1200/month?? - depends on which state you're in I guess, paid right from the Treasury.

All those people in govt. administering those programs now could get other productive jobs.

Alas, we demonize any kind of govt. help now, so it probably doesn't have a chance, but I think it was a great idea!

BTW, I was a moderate Republican, voted for Reagan in 1984, and Bush in 1988, then saw what 12 years of Republicans did to our country's debt, and other social programs, and switched to the Dems in 1992. Recent events in the late 90s and in this new century have only reinforced my beliefs...
