If you watch that video you can see that the collapse is initiated in the crash impact zone. The portion of the building above the impact zone moves as a unit. The cause of the collapse is column failure in the impact zone. Many of the columns were damaged due to the impact. The remaining columns were exposed to fire thus reducing their strength. In addition the effective length of the columns were increased due to failure of the floor truss connections. The floor system provided bracing to the columns, thus reducing their length and increasing the resistance to buckling. Loss of the floor support increased the length of the columns. The combination of the reduced number of columns in conjunction with the increase in effective length and the weakening of the steel by fire precipitated the collapse in the impact zone. The building then experienced a progressive failure due to the upper portion of the building accelerating due to gravity through the impact zone and hitting the floors below. Debris from portions above the impact zone were thrust downward through the floor system, progressively removing the lateral support of the columns just as the vertical load was being increased on the columns due to the dynamic forces of the upper portion of the building falling downward on them. It's clear that it was a top town progressive failure from the video. All this hokum about the building being brought down by demolition charges is just that...hokum. The buildings collapsed as a direct result of the plane impacts and resulting fires. The fact that the buildings stayed up for an hour after the impact is a testament to the building's strength. Had there been more stairways in the building, say one in each quadrant of the building, more people could have escaped the collapse. Since the stairs were located in the core, where the fire and impact occurred, meant that people above the impact zone could not exit. If there are any lessons to be learned it's to get as many people out of the building as quickly as possible. A better fire suppression system could have made a huge difference as well. Designers of high rise should also consider the addition of "super columns" dispersed through the building to help carry the additional loads imposed on the remaining columns when such an attack occurs. All this crap about someone taking the building down with explosives is just that...crap. Orca
