Might I ask...how does this current comment square with your having called for him to be fired, and claiming he was not fit to serve as president of Harvard?

<< I don't think neither CB nor I are uncomfortable with Dr. Summers question about innate abilities. >>

I am not uncomfortable with the question of innate abilities. I am not afraid of the question. I am not going to challenge anything that is scientifically valid.

But that does not mean I agree with what Dr. Summers said, implied, or asked as a question.

People in a position of public trust can't say irresponsible things. It is my opinion that Dr. Summers expressed thoughts that came out of ignorance.

This is not a free speech issue.

As an example of something that a person in a position of public trust (say the President of the United States) can't say:

"I am not saying we should do this, but I think we should possibly look into this. IMO I am uncomfortable with ugly people. I wonder if we could start a research program looking into how ugly people come into being and perhaps find a way to bring less ugly people into our country. I am not sure this can even be done. I am only asking this question to promote thinking out fo the box."

I know this is an exaggeration. But, to me, Dr. Summers remarks not only with respect to innate abilities of women in the sciences, but also about Jewish farmers, and white men in basketball is similar. It is irresponsible. It has no basis.

I absolutely do not want to shut off this discussion. I would like Dr. Summers to explain himself to his peers. If he can't explain it, termination or resignation is in order.
