This is old news, but here it is:

FRAM to get a ride on mass transit

Ramtron International Corp.'s ferroelectric RAM (FRAM) technology will be embedded into contactless smart cards that are being developed as replacements for the magnetic-strip devices now used in many mass transit systems.

Colorado Springs, Colo.-based Ramtron was chosen by the Cubic Automatic Revenue Collection Group to furnish FRAM for use in fare cards to be introduced in major cities worldwide in 1998. Cubic, San Diego, operates collection systems around the globe that process more than 20 million passengers daily and collect more than $3 billion in annual revenue, the company said.

Cubic's new Go Card, an ISO 7816-compliant carrier approximately the size of a credit card, will enable a single debit device to be used for all types of intermodal transportation, according to the company.

"Transit operators around the world have asked for ways to improve the flexibility of their systems by making transfers from one system to the other virtually seamless," said John Lincoln, Cubic's president and chief executive. "The contactless smart card provides a means to that end by providing a one-card-fits-all approach to intermodal transfers."

Cubic will integrate an ASIC with Ramtron's FRAM to render a contactless card that can be recognized by a card reader without removing the device from a pocket or purse.

FRAM is a high-endurance memory that combines the nonvolatility of flash memory with the write speeds of SRAM, according to Ramtron.
