I agree. Felt the same way when San Jose (my hometown) started their recycle program. It was forced on us, and the first versions were very user-unfriendly. Then, come to find out, they ended up dumping tons of recycled glass into a landfill because there was no market for it... There seem to be only two sides to the 'Green' category: the cynical and the fanatical. There must be room in the middle. That's why I think hybrid cars are so great (at least so far). They are one of the few 'Green' efforts to fall into the middle: meaningful yet practical.
