re: They are worthless in the sense that you can make a basic consumer DVR without them. But if you notice, most of them are what gives Tivo its sheer elegance. I dread DirecTV's future replacement of Tivo with their proprietary (NDS) system.

I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think DirecTV is going to replace TiVo... just stop promoting it in favor of the NDS system. I believe they are too sensitive to the potential loss of subscribers if they force a hardware change.
