Tonto posted a good link to a PBS NOVA story. In that article the engineer says that all buildings collapse downward on their footprint. When you think of the weight involved and the force of gravity, the building has no choice but to seek it's footprint. He points out further that with a 200 foot wide base, the building would need to be bent over more than 100 feet to tip over! Of course the building could never get that far over without the exterior columns buckling and the building collapsing straight down anyway!

The engineer also recalls his conversation with demolition experts. They told him that the timing of the charges was what make buildings collapse straight down. He believed it then...but after thinking about it some more drew the conclusion that the timing was not that critical. Gravity sucks...downward. So those demolition guys can BS their customers into thinking they need precision demolition...when the fact is that they probably don't. The demo guys are probably laughing all the way to the bar.
