CMU stands for concrete masonry unit. Many people incorrectly use cement instead of concrete in the industry, which has always surprised me.

It may have something to do with Ellie Mae Clampett always mentioning her cement pond...

Yup, it sounded pretty silly to me. Here's a simple test. Get the person who believes in the Divine Wind theory to take a CMU (cement masonry unit, or "cinder block" to the layman) and ask him to hold it over an extended foot in a stiff breeze and drop the damn thing. The Divine Wind theory will not be believed for more than ~10 m/s/s. Take ibuprofen as needed.
