I know all about Wahabbism, including that while you weren't watching it morphed from simply a way to purify the religion into an activist, suicide jihadi, hate-filled culture. Saudi funding has spread Wahabbism, it's virulent form, to all corners of the globe. It was tinder that just needed a match to make it catch fire and Osama was that match.

I am unclear why you think Wahhabism has spread to "the four corners of the globe". My understanding is that its primarily on the Arabian Peninsula, specifically in Saudi Arabia. Elroy might know better than I.

Also, I hear that old, tired argument about how much Muslims contributed to humanity back in the 8th century, but what since then? Close to a thousand years is a long time for a culture to fester and produce nothing.

Excuse me but the Muslim empire did not begin until the 8th century and by the 12th century it stretched from S. Spain to Indonesia. Between the 12th and 14th centuries, it lost most of its Asian states and was mainly confined to N. Africa and the ME and some parts of southern Europe. Between the 14th and 18th centuries, the Islam empire and Europe ran parallel existences. It was the industrial revolution that put Europe on a different track and by the middle of the 19th century, Europe was in the ascendency while the Muslim empire was begining its slow collapse.

Muslim contributions are huge and stretch from the 8th century to the 19th. Western contributions are mainly from the 17th century to the present. Islam was no slouch.

The time for the world to sit back and hope the Middle East sorts itself out passed long ago. It just took us awhile (and 9/11) to realize it.

The US gov't was meddling in ME affairs long before 9/11. You just didn't know it.
