I think we need to clarify what "support" means in the "we support the troops" cliche.

It could mean an infinite number of things. Just one example:

"I am willing to purchase a decal and apply it to the the back of car, and I am willing to support the political party that is generally perceived as being in favor of a vast military, but I am unwilling to devote substantial personal funds to bettering the conditions of the troops' families here in the U.S., and I am unwilling to accept an increase in taxes so that we can pay for the war as we go instead of borrowing money from foreigners to fund it, and I am unwilling to persuade my children to join the military and assist in the fighting in Iraq."

There is literally an infinite number of possible interpretations of "support" in this context.
