King Fahd's Expansion of The Holy Mosques of Makkah and Madinah
INTRODUCTORY NOTE
Of all the projects undertaken by Saudi Arabia during the reign of King Fahd, the expansion of the Holy Mosques in the Holy Cities of Makkah and Madinah stands apart as central to the King's and the Kingdom's purpose. As Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Fahd has spared no effort and no expense in developing the Two Holy Mosques to accommodate in safety the vast numbers of pilgrims who visit the Kingdom each year, while at the same time taking great care to ensure that the expansion is entirely consistent with the architectural design of the existing structures.
In 1988 (1408/09 AH) King Fahd laid the foundation stone for the third Saudi expansion of the Mosque in the Holy City of Makkah, and so began the latest, and most spectacular, phase in its recent development. In his role as Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Fahd's attention to the needs of the Holy Places has been unfaltering, and most obviously manifested in a multi-billion dollar program of modernization to make the places of pilgrimage more accessible to ever greater numbers.

Jeddah, 30th August 2003
In an address to the 19th session of the International Supreme Council for Mosques, held in Makkah today, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd bin Abdul Aziz stressed the importance of the social role of mosques, in accordance with the correct principles of Islam.
He said that the Kingdom supports the promotion of Islamic values through the mosque. The Kingdom, host to Islam’s two holiest mosques, looks forward to seeing Al-Aqsa Mosque in Al-Quds (Jerusalem) liberated, and returned to the Islamic fold, to enable Muslims from all over the world to travel to Islam’s third holiest destination and Qibla (direction of prayer).

Fahd's education took place at the Princes' School in Riyadh, a school established by Ibn Saud specifically for the education of members of the House of Saud. While studying at the Princes' School Fahd studied under tutors including Sheikh Abdul-Ghani Khayat. Following his education at the Princes' School, Fahd moved on to the Religious Knowledge Institute in Mecca, where he studied Wahhabi Islam.
