If they have anything to say about it it's in the context of "I support the troops, too, in my own way, so stop thinking me unpatriotic."

Ok. I agree that this is probably true of reasonable people on the left. Most reasonable people are able to understand and recognize both or all of the complicating perspectives and have a leaning in a particular direction without going to extremes.

There are also lefties that are further toward the extreme of anti-military, especially an industrialized military like we have. Many of these people have a pacifist philosophy regarding political squables and international affairs, and are radically opposed to supporting any of our military operations and objectives.

The military has one single purpose when you boil it all down. It is an organization devoted to developing a violent force that will maintain and/or advance the political objectives for its nation, with being a violent force as the primary focus.

The pacifist lefties I have known do not support people who condone, stand up for, engage in, or sign up to be an agent of violence for promoting political objectives. There are exceptions to every rule but we are speaking of something that has become a universal slogan for the left. So, I am left with my earlier context. Given that large numbers of people have voluntarily enlisted over the past couple of years. They did so presumably because they have adequate intelligence to determine what they were signing up for and promoting with their willingness to be an agent of our military.

How is the statement 'we support the troops' to be interpreted regarding the troops who enlisted to serve as an agent of our violent forces and their objectives in Iraq?
