Doris Kerns Goodwin disappointed me this morning on Imus. Imus told her the origin of the phrase “Mad as a Hatter” came from the fact that the skins they used were processed with mercury, and a lot of them ended up with severe mood swings. Doris goes “I never heard that before!!!” Come on Goodwin, everyone knows that one. You’re supposed to be the big historian.
