Then, as you say, the patient will die -- as, ultimately, we all will. Many people with possibly incurable illnesses actually prefer not to know anything about their illness and carry on living their lives as if nothing has changed. On the other hand, others prefer to regard their illness as potentially curable and do what they can to live. Existentially, after all, life is only what one makes of it.

Some people prefer to live and die with their eyes open, others prefer it if their eyes are closed -- likewise their minds.
