20 attorneys general probe DirecTV
DETROIT, Sept. 3 (UPI) _ Attorneys general from 20 states reportedly are investigating DirecTV as a result of consumer complaints over channel changes in certain presold packages.
The Wall Street Journal reports the states, led by Florida and Pennsylvania, are trying to determine whether the satellite television programmer, a unit of General Motor's Hughes Electronics subsidiary, committed consumer fraud by removing the channels from its packages and then selling them at a higher rate.
As part of a year-long rebate program that ended in July, customers bought dishes and a year's programming that included seven Encore movie channels. In April, however, DirecTV removed the Encore channels form its Total Choice package, which sells for $29.99 a month. The company then tacked on an extra $4 for those channels.
Also participating in the investigation are Arizona, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New Mexico, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Vermont and West Virginia.
DirecTV says though the channels were removed, others were substituted and maintains there have been no widespread complaints.
