Go figure. I have to wonder if there is really any factual basis for either argument. The casinos have very little control over the payouts of specific machines. The state gaming commissions control the random number generators, and the casino's ability to set the payback ratio is within a very narrow range.

I think the best rule of thumb is to avoid lower denomination machines (less that $1) since their payback ratios are usually quite low. I've been told by casino dealers that penny and nickel slots go as low as 75% payback... highway robbery. $5 and up machines typically payback 98-99% over the long run.
