The Creature From Jekyll Island by G. Edward Griffin had some interesting insights on the events leading up to the Great Depression.

I really enjoyed this economic history because of the way the author, a real gold bug/hard money type, toned down the rhetoric, stuck to the facts and argued his case. I gave it my own "book of the year award" for 2004 - a lot for me since I am generally hostile to the gold bug cause and a fan of Greenie and central banking in general.
