Local firm QNX is beating Microsoft at its own game, writes James Bagnall. And it has the sales figures to prove it.

QNX is also negotiating to supply the realtime operating system for several manufacturers of network computers, stripped down machines that will usually run on Java and require little maintenance.

One of these is to be built by Corel Computer Corp. However, QNX is unlikely to win this contest because Corel has opted for a StrongARM processor made by Digital Equipment Corp. QNX doesn't currently support the StrongARM technology, although it would move to do so, in the unlikely event Corel picks it as the OS.
