Attention Business Editors:

BT SELECTS GPT AND SIEMENS / NEWBRIDGE ALLIANCE FOR BROADBAND MULTISERVICE ATM

KANATA, Canada, MUNICH, Germany, Sept. 3 /CNW/ - BT has selected GPT and
the Siemens / Newbridge Alliance as the supplier for its new Broadband
Multiservice Platform. With this landmark decision, BT becomes the first major
service provider to implement a strategy of a single broadband asynchronous
transfer mode (ATM) core network. The contract awarded to GPT includes
MainStreetXpress(TM) switches, customer access equipment and network and
service management from the Siemens / Newbridge Alliance and Newbridge
Affiliate companies. This network will enable BT to seamlessly deliver a
comprehensive range of services to its customers.
``ATM is now accepted as the most effective technology for building
flexible and scalable multiservice networks,'' said Stewart Davies, Director,
Network Product Design & Management at BT. ``The way in which the Siemens /
Newbridge Alliance has implemented ATM maps perfectly onto this vision,
enabling BT to consolidate our existing services and rapidly implement new
services, such as business IP. The solution integrates all elements of the
network from the core and multiservice edge switches, to specialist network
termination equipment, into a single, managed platform architecture, resulting
in service and cost benefits for BT,'' Davies added.
``This contract award keeps BT at the forefront of broadband and data
service delivery in the U.K. and internationally,'' said Roger Gilbert, Head
of BT's Data Services Marketing.
``Our national and international Cellstream (ATM) service, successfully
launched this year, has established BT ATM service leadership. As well as
seeing continued Cellstream service growth we expect to continue to lead the
marketplace by exploiting the technology to offer new and innovative solutions
to our customers, including metropolitan area-based services and integration
of local and wide area services,'' continued Gilbert. ``Working together with
Siemens and Newbridge, we will provide BT with a world-class network to meet
the needs of its customers well into the next century,'' commented Rod Smith,
Managing Director of BT and Concert Division, GPT.
``By endorsing the Siemens / Newbridge Alliance vision of service
provider networks, BT will benefit from a smooth evolutionary approach to the
development of a managed, broadband multiservice infrastructure'' said Terence
Matthews, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Newbridge Networks. ``We see
this as yet further evidence of the continued strength in our relationship
with Siemens and GPT.''
``The Siemens / Newbridge Alliance solution will enable BT to develop
future services, providing an infrastructure capable of scaling to meet the
demands of global corporations. This success follows the initial CellStream
contract in 1996 and reaffirms BT's approval to our ongoing broadband
development program,'' commented Thomas Rambold, President, Siemens Public
Communication Networks Group.
Under the new contract BT will be able to purchase Alliance equipment
from GPT including the MainStreetXpress 36130 ATM Services Access Multiplexer,
the MainStreetXpress 36150 Access Switch, the MainStreetXpress 36170
Multiservices Switch, the MainStreetXpress 36190 Core Services Switch, the
world's largest ATM switch, and the ACC Tigris(TM) Integrated Access Platform.
Siemens Public Communication Networks Group (Munich, Germany) and
Newbridge Networks (Kanata, Canada), two of the world leaders in ATM, formed a
strategic networking alliance in 1996 to provide carriers worldwide with the
most comprehensive and advanced ATM solution set. With this agreement, the two
companies have unified their ATM product lines under the MainStreetXpress
brand and assembled the industry's most extensive ATM research and development
operation -- more than 1,500 engineers in five countries. In North America,
Siemens Public Communication Networks Group is represented by Siemens
Stromberg-Carlson, Boca Raton, Fla.
