Lindy,

I believe that the F-35 is designed to be a less expensive plane than the F-22 (which is more expensive, and may get cut back?). This plane was designed to serve the needs of all the services with fixed wing fighters. The idea, is that the unit price will drop considerably once the program will really running because the Airforce, Navy and Marines will be purchasing the plane. It is meant to replace planes that will be 20-30 years old.
