One of the key players and possible architect of broad resistance Walid Jumblatt comes out of his enclave. Lebanon protests continue with eyes on Syria, MP Walid Jumblatt, flew during the night on a tour to Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Russia for consultations on the situation in Lebanon.

BEIRUT: Street protests continued on Saturday in Beirut as the crisis unleashed by the killing of ex-premier Rafiq Hariri deepened, with pressure mounting on powerful neighbour Syria to announce a full troop pullout from the country.

Amid complete political paralysis since Hariri’s assassination last month, the world awaited for Syria to announce later Saturday at least a troop pullback to areas closer to its borders. But such an announcement by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in an address to parliament would remain short of the full withdrawal requested by the international community. In a surprise move, the outspoken torchbearer for Lebanon’s emboldened opposition, MP Walid Jumblatt, flew during the night on a tour to Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Russia for consultations on the situation in Lebanon.

Jumblatt, who had remained at his mountain home for security reasons in the last two weeks, has accused the pro-Syrian regime and Damascus. afp
