Just one thing needs to be done. (1) Copy all your photos onto CD's

Most CD's are not archival, meaning they may have a shorter life span than one would assume. One rarely discovers they're dead until exactly when needed, and data recovery from dead ones is a royal bitch.

My system consists of three identical (content wise) one terabyte hard drives (with USB2 and Firewire), one of which I keep off site. I never use CDs for deep storage. Ever. When USB2 and Firewire become extinct and/or the drives die/fill, I'll drag/drop to whatever comes next.
