If the missiles are incoming to the US, they might not care what the US thinks and would want us to stop any defensive action. Particularly, if the missiles have nukes.

If incoming nuclear missiles are coming toward the US and we had the ability to shoot them down we would not let Canadian opinion stop us. Its not just a Bush thing or a Republican thing, few Democrats would just sit their and take a nuclear strike because the Canadians don't want us to do anything about it. And its not just an American thing. Almost other country, current or historical, would, if it found itself in that in that positition would try to shoot down the missiles with or without Canada's permission.

My God, what does it matter? The world as we know will no longer exist. The Canadians were making a point. Your guy threatened them and they responded back.

But the real reason they made that comment is because the US ambassador to Canada threatened their sovereignty

He did not such thing. He didn't say "we will take away your sovereignty. He said he thought Canada would want to be in on something that effects their sovereignty. It was an odd statement, and probably one that shouldn't have been made, but it was not a threat.

Its typical of this administration. They threaten everyone when they do not get their way. That's why the Canadians gave the response they gave.
