To correct a bit of a mistake you have made- I made the comment on the Iraq war more than a month BEFORE telling another poster to stay on topic. In fact, I had no idea you were responding to a post from January- I thought you were posting my own post to me in response to what I posted TODAY, which is why your post made absolutely no sense to me, and seemed pure annoyance. I had no idea you were responding today to a January post- it makes more sense now, but your behavior still annoys me.
You keep thinking it's about ideas- it's not, and this confusion on your part will probably continue to prevent us from ever having the super meaningful discussion of "ideas" which you think you might have with people of the left if only (gosh darn it) they wouldn't ban you. You don't have any ideas to share I haven't discussed many places on SI before, over and over and over again. You aren't bringing anything new to the party. I've already talked about polygamy (I don't have a problem with it), and group marriage (I don't have a problem with it), and incestuous marriage (as long as the folks are adults I don't have a problem with it), and child marriage (I think competency is a problem, and children need to be protected because they cannot consent to sexual relationships with adults). I don't care if gay marriage leads to most of the things you bring up, and I'm pretty confident, due to an almost universal acceptance of our duty to protect children, that child marriage will not become an issue here. Please DO turn your concern toward the girls of India and Africa, though, since they do suffer terribly with the burden of child marriage- and I DO hope you can actually do something about it. Get involved! Stand up for the rights of those poor child brides (and I don't think gay marriage had anything to do with their status as child brides). I'm thrilled you are so interested in the topic of marriage- gay, group, polygamous, etc, and I'm glad that you find it all new and exciting. I hope you will explore this in depth with other folks who also find the topic new and exciting, and haven't already beaten it to death many times before (most recently, if I recall, I posted excessively on this topic on the Foreign Affairs Discussion Group thread, but I think I've discussed it just about everywhere, with many, many people, almost all of whom disagreed with me- gosh, kind of blows your hypothesis, doesn't it?)
Now go play high fivesies in YOUR echo chambers, and pretend I won't talk to big bad Conservatives about Issues, when I really just banned you because I don't enjoy you (I can do that, you know, and I don't think I should have to talk to people I don't enjoy. Do YOU think I should have to talk to people I don't enjoy? Should you have to talk to people you don't enjoy- or do you just think that I should have to?) I will tell you, just as a final treat, that I am tired of discussing the same old issues (even if someone enjoyable is involved), because there doesn't seem to be much point. I've discussed just about every issue on SI- probably more than once, and I've honestly gotten bored with the sequence of events that (usually) takes place. It starts out innocently enough, then someone gets their feelings hurt, or takes the issue too personally, or feels you've said something SO horrible, or stupid, or biased, that you "need" to be insulted personally (because it's really "warranted", and in fact there is something "noble" in the whole thing)- then, usually, people on the thread align like little charged particles on either side of the argument, and there are more insults, and then the whole thing dies down until the NEXT time, when the same thing happens. Yeah, I prefer not to experience that. It's boring, and unpleasant. |
