Those figures are from several sources. Besides, they are corroborated in indirect ways. If the Taliban lied about the figures, then that could be easily disproved by the extent of opium traffic outside of Afghanistan. Karzai "won" the election because they were so inconsequential that the warlords didn't even bother to disrupt them. Outside of Kabul and without the US lifeline, Karzai would be history within a few days.
